2016 Mazda BT50 Review

2016-mazda-bt50-review

The 2016 Mazda BT-50 is a pick-up that looks car-like and edgy but feels more road-friendly than many of its rivals. It may not appear as different as some people may have hoped, but its macho look is definitely worthy of everyone’s attention. To this day, the BT-50 is still one of the most competitively-priced models in the segment. It goes head to head with the likes of the Holden Colorado and the Isuzu D-Max.

Pricing

The new Mazda BT-50 ute has 23 variants. It consists of three body types: freestyle-carb, single-cab, and dual-cab. The pricing for this range has not changed much, from $25,570 to $53,790. The BT-50 has historically done better in the two-wheel drive version than in the four-wheel drive in terms of sales. In 2015, the 4×2 models have had 3,474 units in sales or 12.9 percent of the market share. The 4×4 variants, meanwhile, have taken only 6.8 percent of the market share.

Mazda Australia’s managing director, Martin Benders, said the company received rejections from the small business and fleet buyers – which is more than what they needed. Benders said it did not turn off the private buyers. He added that the changes should appeal to business and fleet buyers, and will not detract from private ones. He believes that it was where the company got the growth opportunity.

Features

There is a host of new standard equipment for all models apart from the changes done on the cosmetics. The company has given importance to 4×2 models and has decided to spend more time in the entry-level 4×2 XT single-cab variant. This entry-level model is run by a four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine with a torque displacement of 375Nm and power of 110kW. The automatic version has a starting price of $28, 815, plus the on-road costs. The diesel engine runs from 1,500-2,500RPM, and revving it up can get quite loud inside because the XT variants lack the engine cover that helps lessen the cabin noise.

The six-speed automatic transmission behaves quite well. It swaps between cogs smoothly, and you get to pick the right gear without hassle. There could be times, where driving through steeper hills will make you wish for a quicker downshift, but this is just a minor issue. The BT-50 XT variant is ready for the rough work, but the auto model has a Hi-Rider body that is 30mm higher when unladen and stretches to 65mm when laden. It also betters the manual two-wheel-drive version’s payload by over 205kg.

The XT’s interior has two bucket seats, instead of the three-seat bench in the Hi-Rider guise. It also features driver’s seat height adjustment, new interior highlights, and a new cloth trim. These are all done in gunmetal gray finish, instead of the usual shiny silver. There is now a lockable glovebox, as well. Mazda retained the small dash-top screen on all XT models, including the many buttons underneath. The company did not adopt the touchscreen media system because it is fitted to the GT and XTR models.

Handle and Steering Like SUV

The Japanese brand tuned the steering and suspension similarly to that of an SUV. Unlike the Ford Ranger where its steering system was upgraded to an electronic rather than a hydraulic unit, the BT-50 still has its hydraulic system. This means the steering can be quite heavy but offers a nice linear response when driving at higher speeds. The vehicle is also competent when it comes to cornering, and is stable in bends as well.

The Tech Side

The GT and XTR models have a new 7.8-inch touchscreen. It features a simple navigation system that quickly responds. The Bluetooth audio, phone streaming, and USB playback are all usable through the glovebox. Mazda retained the dials, as well as the buttons and knobs, but the cabin now offers a practical space.

The back seat is impressively comfortable and quiet. It also now has a new fold-down armrest that comes with cup holders – perfect for longer driving. The door pockets are adequately positioned all-around, while there are bottle holders for you to enjoy as well. However, the BT-50 does not have any optional safety equipment, unlike in the brand’s passenger car models. It means there is no blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, or lane-keeping assistance. The model does have the standard requirement, which includes airbags.

There is a reverse-view camera in the GT and XTR models. It comes optional in all other trim levels. The servicing costs can be determined based on your chosen engine, but all models need maintenance every 12 months or 10,000km – whichever comes first. This is more regular than many of its rivals, where some brands only require maintenance every 20,000km. The 2.2-litre will average $428 for the first 50,000km, while the 3.2-litre will have $450.

Verdict: is it worth it?

The 2016 Mazda BT-50 remains to be one of the better choices in it class. It offers value-for-money, with comfort as one of its priorities for this model. This model still has competitively-priced variants that better many of its rivals in this segment.

The high-end versions offer more technological features, but the entry-level has everything you need for a smooth drive. It may have a more regular servicing at 10,000km or 12 months, but the overall satisfaction it gives make the effort well worth it. Moreover, driving the BT-50 feels more comfortable, even during longer travels. The fact that it looks more macho gives buyers a bonus.

Powerful engine

The rating of Toyota Prius is 72kW and 142Nm. The power offered by electrical motor is 53KW. The new power train relies more upon batteries at higher speeds. As per the new version, the batteries will cling to the drive system up to 110 km/her and it is based on the operation of the throttle and typography of the terrain. The old version singed off from the battery at 70 km/hr. The drive mode settings were adjusted to this extent by Toyota engineers. There are three settings including normal, eco and power.

The throttle response in eco mode will be similar to the third generation of Toyota Prius. The power mode appears to be little and there is not considerable change from the earlier version. The mileage recorded with the 3rd generation model was 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers. It was 5.4 was liters per 100 kilometers with the new version. The drive train will be disassociated in a much quieter way than the earlier versions.

You can exercise more control and precision than the predecessor. There will be less body role at corners. There is better response from the steering. The direction changes can be done very quickly.

Comfort level

In spite of the significant change in the rear suspension, there is no change in the comfort level. However, there was little improvement in the control of the body. There is better raking experience and pedal feel with the new model. There are major changes in the cabin so that the comfort level is enhanced. The cabin comes with high quality finish and more space is available than the older version.

You can notice very nice look and feel of the dashboard. The steering wheel design is enhanced. There are great improvements in the storage front. These improvements include bigger door pockets and better cup holders. There is larger boot space (502 liters). As there is extra large leg room, the rear seat space has increased. The quiet performance of the car will let you make the most of your time, effort and money. The first impressions of the car are positive. There is significant drop in fuel usage. Because of the positioning of the battery packs, 10% additional space is added for cargo. High-resolution LCD screens, stylized air vents and glossy white highlights are some worthy features in the new Toyota Prius.

Advantages

  • Fuel economy
  • Hybrid drive system (petrol and electrical energy)
  • Disassociation of drive train is very quiet

Honda Civic Type R – Car Review

Honda Civic Type R – Getting You Everywhere You Need to Go, But Faster

Honda Civic Type R Overview

Honda has revealed its mightiest model ever-  the Honda Civic Type R. This model was conceptualised down in 2014 but finally came into production this year. Unfortunately, the company may not release the model in Australia until as late as 2017 which presently leaves the Civic Type R destined to be a European child.

It is Honda’s first ever turbocharged vehicle and it stands up to its mark with an all-new powerful engine. The vehicle is charged by a 2.0 litre four cylinder direct injected VTEC. The efficient engine is capable of producing 306 horsepower at 6500 rpm and delivers 296 lb ft torque at 2500 rpm. Though the car touches the redline at 7000 rpm, which is much lower than the earlier versions like Type Rs, the other figures are at an all time high for all Honda  models.

With this kind of hardcore inner strength, the engine is well accompanied by a six-speed manual transmission with a mechanical aluminium knob sitting atop the gear shifter. The new Honda Civic Type R sprints from a 0 speed to a 62mph speed in 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 168 mph.

Honda has also shown off some new technology with the Type R  in the form of four modes adjustable dampers. There is a ‘+R’ button on the instrument cluster’s left side which sits just opposite to the ‘Engine Start’ button resting on the right side. The ‘+R’ button sets the dampers to their firmest arrangement and also makes the steering tighter and improves the throttle response.

Special Brembo brakes have been fitted in the chassis which have front rotors of 13.8 inch size and also have four piston callipers. A Dual Axis Strut Front Suspension similar to that in Ford’s Revoknuckle works with two supporting kingpins that reduce torque steer and gives the Honda Civic Type R a well balanced body while driving. As far as rear suspension is concerned, higher stiffness is provided by a torsion beam with an H-shaped section. Similarly, the steering is electrically assisted and rests rack mounted.

Escalated Aerodynamic concept in the exterior

Although the earlier versions produced by Honda were all aerodynamically enabled, the new Honda Civic Type R has been updated further from the outside for looks as well as functionality.. Features that have been added in the new generation Honda offspring include: front fender outlet vents, a lower front splitter that goes well with a deep air dam, flat tray on the under-body, a higher rear wing and rear diffuser. All of these qualities give an overall high-performing, but fuel conscious experience for its buyers.

Buyers can also opt for a GT package which gives  the front and rear spoilers red accents.

Better safety

The Honda Civic Type R has been manufactured with a keen eye towards convenience packed with maximum safety to enhance the driver’s experience even at higher speeds. The car gives adequate warnings like the front collision warning and lane departure warning. Parking sensors work well to avoid unnecessary hits during parking and even make it easier to come out of the parking areas.

Interesting interior decorHonda Civic Type R Interior

High-back sports seats await the driver and passengers  and are as stylish as they are comfortable. The material that makes the ambience all the more beautiful is black faux suede in the seat covers which has been further highlighted by red out-stitching. The look of the steering wheel has also been enhanced by red stitching topped with a red band in the centre.

The standard media and communication system includes: a better navigation system, higher quality audio system, rain-sensing wipers, and an automatic dual-zone climate control have all been incorporated.

Pricing and worth

Interested buyers will have to shell out approximately $45000 to $ 55000 to own a new Honda Civic Type R. Its hatchback style and aerodynamic exterior,  definitely give it an edge during racing events. One thing is for sure, sports car lovers will have a satisfying experience owning and using a Honda Civic Type R for fun driving as well as for their day-to-day.

Best Small Car Australia 2015

Subaru Impreza. A $23,490

2015-Subaru-WRX-STI-Specs

You can not compare small cars without talking about the best.  The title of the best small car goes to the Subaru Impreza.  For this title we are focusing on getting the top vehicle in the category overall, irrespective of the economics.  The Impreza is a comparably well bundled package that took the crown from other compact options.  The handling is very smooth and sensitive, which is what you would expect given its standard all-wheel drive.  Its is also surprisingly spacy with an open interior and a large cargo area.  This year Subaru smoothed out the noise engine issues from previous years making more quiet ride, however it is still not perfect in that department.  Additionally, the manufacturer ramped up the noise insulation to enhance the performance of the all new audio system.

The max power of the engine is 110 kW @ 6200 rpm.  The fuel tank capacity is 55 liters and the manufacturer has the fuel efficiency coming in at 7.1L / 100 km.  There is a dual airbag package with anti-lock braking for control.  The steering type is rack & pinion power assisted.  The vehicle dimensions are Height: 1465mm Width: 1740 mm  Length: 4580 mm with a ground clearance of 145 mm.  The manufacturer warranty comes in at a relatively weak 36 month / 999,000 kms.

Overall, this is simply the best small package on the road with impressive performance without compromising too significantly on fuel efficiency.

Reasons to Buy

  • Road performance highlighted by all-wheel drive
  • Controls and premium stock features

Reasons Not to Buy

  • Low for class fuel economy
  • Excessive noise

Most Economical Small Car 2015

Toyota Prius V, A$ 34,490

2013-toyota-prius-liftback_100414346_m

The Prius is awarded the best value small car of 2015 because of its reasonable price and unparalleled fuel economy.  This is definitely not the cheapest small car, but it delivers at the price.  The Prius bloodline has continued to deliver improvements into 2015.  The latest version is more beefy boasting a larger body that gives it a different presence than the previous version.  On of the major benefits of the size increase is the improved rear seating.  The drive is responsive and well-controlled which you would expect from such and experienced manufacturer.  Steering and handling is sufficient but not outstanding, but then again this is not something for extreme performance.

The Prius is exceptionally economical coming in at 4.4L / 100km.  It is a hybrid engine with a continuous variable transmission.  Hybrid engines do have drawbacks with regards to maintenance, but the efficiency will typically overcompensate for any incurred repair costs.  The measurements of the car are Height: 1590 mm Length: 4615 mm Width: 1775 mm.  The power output of the engine is 73 kW @ 5200 rpm which is solid.  However, going up hills or merging on the highway does put the engine to work

Overall, the Toyota Prius V is one of the most economical new small cars you can buy.  The upfront cost is a bit higher than others in the category, but you recoup your upfront payment with stellar efficiency.

Reasons to Buy:

  • Fuel Economy, really couldnt ask for much more cleath the best value small car
  • Rear Seating, with the expanded body in 2015 your passengers have the room they need

Reasons Not to Buy

  • Steering Feel, can be a bit shaky at times
  • Cost, the price tag is not cheap all depends on what your budget allows

Best Small Car Under 20,000

Kia Rio, A$17,960

hero_rio_2013--kia-960x

Kia Rio, A$17,960

The title of most economical small car goes to the Kia Rio.  While the Kia may be one of the cheapest small car on the road, it does an excellent job of delivering at the price point.  One of the most surprising things about the Rio is that it feels surprisingly solid for the size.  Keep in mind, this is a little car.  Compared to competitors the solid feel stuck out as the primary benefit and it shows in its high safety rating.  Unfortunately, the interior is a bit boxy and uncomfortable.  Though it does include  Additionally, it does a poor job with noise cancellation meaning a bit noisier drive than I would have liked.

The max power of the engine is 79kW @6300rpm.  The fuel capacity is 44 L with fuel consumption of 6.1L / 100km.  The dimensions are Height: 1455 mm Width: 1720 mm Length: 4045 mm with a ground clearance of 140 mm. With a warranty of 60 month / 990,000 kms it leaves little to be desired on that front.  The engine is a 1.6 liter four cylinder automatic, relatively standard among the class.   The steering is rack & pinion power assisted with only front wheel drive.

Overall, the Kia Rio is a solid blend of price and performance.  With better than average fuel efficiency you will be able to save in the long term as well.  Great value for the price.

Reason to Buy:

  • Price, coming in lower than 20,000 this is one of the most price competitive options available
  • Transmission, the Rio boasts a reliable automatic transmission

Reasons not to Buy:

  • Ride, not a smooth ride leaving more to be desired
  • Noise, if you are expecting a quiet ride look elsewhere

Most Fuel Efficient Cars in Australia

Over the last couple years, I’ve really tried to focus on saving money.  Now there are many ways to save money but one way a lot of people don’t think about is saving money at the gas pump.  Don’t get me wrong, most of us know where to find the cheapest gas.   However, if you have a gas guzzling vehicle, even the filling up with the cheapest gas will become costly since you will always be at the pump.  An often overlooked part of vehicle shopping is how many kilometres per litre of gas the vehicle is able to produce.  We tend to gravitate to automobiles with low kilometres (which is great!) and something that just catches our eye in general.  I’m guilty of this!  Overall, fuel efficiency hasn’t been a top priority for buyers.

Hopefully, this article can make you more aware of how important fuel efficiency is and save you some money on your next automobile purchase!  Below, I’ll list the five of the most fuel efficient cars in Australia based on the Green Vehicle Guide which is produced by the Australian government.  This list includes only automobiles that use diesel or petrol.  No electric/hybrid automobiles included.

model_mini_5door_default

No, this is not a typo.  Another MINI Copper on the list.  This time, it’s the F55 Cooper D Station Wagon.  With the added room available in this automobile, you would think the performance would suffer drastically from the smaller F56 MINI.  The drop-off is minuscule as the top end speed is 201 km/h and goes 0-100 in 9.4 seconds! And again, one of the most fuel efficient cars on the market!

Fuel consumption (urban) 4.5  l/100km
Fuel consumption (highway) 3.3  l/100km
Fuel consumption (combined) 3.8  l/100 km

Fuel consumption (urban) 4.3  l/100km
Fuel consumption (highway) 3.6  l/100km
Fuel consumption (combined) 3.9  l/100 km

I hope this article showed you can ride in style while in some of the most fuel efficient cars out there.  In addition to gaining more kilometres per litre, fuel efficient cars produce much lower emissions than their inefficient counterparts.  Every kilometre per litre saved makes a difference in the fight against global warming… which is kind of a big deal!  I’ll leave you with this information taken straight from the ClimateHotMap.org  website regarding climate impacts in Australia and New Zealand.

“Australia has one of the world’s highest per capita global warming emissions rates, as well as vast coal reserves that make it the largest exporter of coal in the world. While coal is also New Zealand’s most abundant fossil fuel, the island nation generated 73 percent of its electricity from renewable sources in 2009. New Zealand’s biggest source of emissions is from its agricultural and forestry sectors.  Global warming impacts already underway in Australia and New Zealand include water stress, shrinking glaciers, rising sea level, regional disturbances in rainfall patterns, and increased frequency and intensity of fires and heat waves. Because of these impacts and its contributions to global warming emissions, this region must take swift action to curb global warming emissions.”

Most people will read something like this and not even stop to think about what this really means.  We only have one Earth so anything you can do to potentially help save the environment is critical.  Driving a more fuel efficient car won’t completely solve the problem but it’s a good start!

Electric Cars Australia: Fuel Efficient Car Guide

Introduction to Fuel Efficient Cars: Electric and Hybrid

The future of the automotive industry has arrived in the form of electric and hybrid vehicles.  In a time of awareness to the environmental threats of the classic combustion engine, these alternatives have been widely adopted.  There was a time when Hydrogen Cars seemed poised to enter the market, but it did not experience the same success.  This guide will help you understand the difference between electric and hybrid vehicles and also tell you the best option in each category.

The most fuel efficient cars are electric vehicles.  They are powered by electric motors using energy stored in batteries.  The concept of electric cars began in the 1880s but they were not widely accepted until the early 2000s.  The potential for this technology came with the invention of the rechargeable battery.  The number of mass produced highway capable electric vehicles is nearing 50 and they are disrupting the market.  Many countries are offering benefits to citizens who purchase these vehicles as pollution and resource consumption is becoming a looming issue.

Hybrids were widely adopted sooner than the all electric vehicles.  They contain a dual transmission that is capable of running an electric motor or a combustion engine.  The car is able to seamlessly alternate between the two options depending on the demand that is placed on the vehicle.  Hybrid vehicles commonly offer a 20%-40% efficiency advantage to standard vehicles.  Hybrids do not yield the same environmental benefits as electric.

Best Electric Car

Tesla Model S, A$96,208

01-2012-tesla-model-s-fd-1347336745

The Tesla Model S the crown for the best electric car.  No other electric car in Australia was even close in this race.  It is manufactured by Tesla Motors in California.  Don’t think of this car as an electric tree-hugging vehicle.  It is more of a luxury sports car that just happens to be electric.  It delivers world class performance with un-matched handling and jet-like acceleration.  The ride is comfortable, offering 5 seats and an optional third row for small children.  This allows the car to sit 7 in total.

The Tesla grabs your eye from the beginning.  The flush aluminum door-handle welcomes you with a touch causing them to pop-out and welcome you inside.  Once you enter the interior you are drawn to the 17-inch display that houses all of the controls.  With a simple push to start you now in control of one of the best sports cars even built.

The Tesla battery puts the vehicle in a class of its own.  Unlike other electric cars, its range is in the hundreds of kilometers instead of the dozens.  The 85 kWh battery boasts a range of 502 km.  The range does vary in different temperatures as the cold dissipates the energy causing shorter ranges.  The battery can even plug into standard outlets, although the charges process is not as quick as the manufacturer’s recommended hook up. A full charge cycle takes 12 hours.  A full charge costs about $12 assuming the national average electricity rate.  This makes the running costs exceptionally low and the end result is one of the most fuel efficient cars ever.

The Model S powertrain is so silent that you will not believe it is produces the acceleration and torque that it does.  The car goes from 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225 km/hr.  The handling reacts just as you would expect it, not being too touchy.  The car comes standard with alloy wheels and air suspension.  The car also has 2 regenerative brakes that convert the braking energy into charge.  It has 2 settings for this brake.  One setting applies the brake as you take your foot off of the acceleration pedal.  The other setting does not automatically apply the brake.

In addition to performance the Model S also delivers in safety.  The vehicle is equipped with knee airbags for the front seat in addition to standard front, torso, and curtain air-bags.  It delivered some of the best results in crash testing that have ever been recorded.  It received a 5-star rating and is the best car ever tested in America.

The car comes with an un-matched 8-year, infinite mile warranty.  This covers the drive-train and battery.  In addition, Tesla guarantees re-sale value and will even buy the car back from you based on their depreciation calculations.  This means that you can completely understand your financial investment upfront if you have plans of trading in the car.

In summary, the Tesla is simply the best electric car available.  If you can overcome the price tag you will not regret this decision.

 Best Hybrid Car

Lexus RX 450h, A$84,600

2012_lexus_rx-450h_4dr-suv_base_fq_oem_2_500

The Lexus RX 450h is the hybrid counterpart of the more popular RX 450h.  It is a bold and stylish luxury SUV that will definitely turn heads.  It incorporates Hybrid Technology that increases its efficiency to a competitive level.  The hybrid engine does sacrifice a bit of performance relative to a pure combustions, but the tradeoff is worth it.

From the outside, the vehicle is nothing short of gorgeous.  Notably, the headlights boast a variable lighting system that automatically adjust to ensure they are pointing in the right direction.  The dramatic front grill is striking, composed from an aggressive mesh aluminum.  The car sits on-top of 19” alloy wheels finished in a dark grey.

The Lexus Hybrid Technology incorporates an electric motor and a 3.5 L V6 Atkinson Cycle Petrol engine.  The engine delivers a maximum of 183 kW of power at 6,000 rpm.  This is definitely not shabby and will provide you with more than you need from your hybrid.  To complement the power, the SUV is efficient.  With a fuel consumption of 6.3L / 100 km you will be hard-pressed to find less thirsty SUV.

The 50kW electric motor powers the electric four-wheel drive system (E-Four).  The E-Four saves fuel by only using 4-wheel drive when needed.  During acceleration it only drives the rear wheels.  If additional traction is needed the system adjusts to compensate for your needs.  The power train also features regenerative braking, meaning you don’t need to charge the electric battery.  The four-wheel system captures dissipated heat and converts it into power.

In terms of safety, the car delivers.  Front passengers are protected by front knee and side airbags.  Both front and rear passengers are also protected by curtain bags.  The vehicle also did well in American crash testing, but performed under the Model S benchmark.

The warranty duration is 48 months or 100,000 kms.  The warranty leaves more to be desired, especially considering that it is a hybrid vehicle.  Hybrids are more complex to repair meaning there is most likely higher costs incurred.

In summary, the Lexus RX 450h is the best hybrid car available.  Though it is not as efficient as electric, it offers more flexibility to the user without the hassle of a limited range.  If you need long-distance driving this SUV is for you.
